Parrots - The Nature of Parrots

Some species of parrots make good home pets, but only in the right owner's hands. Parrots in general are not domesticated and even captive-bred birds remain wild by nature. In their natural habitats they are vulnerable to attack from predators, that's why they have adopted a nervous disposition as a survival tactic. They need to be aware of everything going on around them. Parrots are very cautious and sensitive to everything threatening their safety. For millions of years this tactic helped parrots to survive, and present captive-bred generations possess this inherent nervousness.

In the wild parrots are social birds. They live in huge flocks and make collective decisions about when to hide or flee from the predators, when to leave the site, where to find foods, etc. All parrots have a well-developed system of communicating their intentions and reactions to things around them. It is a so-called language based on particular calls and postures. The communicating system of some species consists of about 50 signals.

In the wild, parrots, like all birds, try to fly anywhere. So, in confinement imposed on them by walls, ceilings and the cage, they are sure to have behavioral problems. Also parrots have to get accustomed to glass and mirrors, which adds to their nervousness.
