Parrots - Tips on Training

All parrots are individuals and it's impossible to foresee if a parrot will be difficult to train. There is no difference in males' and females' abilities. To achieve success in parrot training, the master should be calm, even-tempered and loving. Here are some general tips for a better training. If you have baby parrots, start taming them at the age of 2-3 weeks. Just handle them every day. Rub gently their cheek and neck to get them accustomed to your touch and not to be afraid of handling. When the babies are 4-5 weeks old, teach them to step from finger to finger. Budgies (not large parrots) may be allowed to sit on your shoulder. If you want an obedient bird, never allow it free access to your shoulder. The explanation lies in the structure of parrots' flocks: dominant individuals always sit on higher branches. So, if a bird (especially a large one) sits on your shoulder, it doesn't consider you to be the master. You have to choose between an obedient parrot and a shoulder one. Besides, shoulder parrots tend to escape. Birds left out of their cage and walking by themselves are difficult to train and may become aggressive. You should supervise parrots when they are out of the cage.
